How to play craps in 5 easy steps

It’s not difficult to get started in craps, be it online or land-based casino. The procedures may seem complicated, but in reality, they are as simple as learning how to play street craps

It can be even better if you have a craps strategy and learned how to play craps table.

Step 1: Find an open spot at the table

Land-based casino: The table can be occupied by up to 8 players with 4 staff which adds up to 12 individuals. If it gets too fast-paced, look for a less crowded table.

Online casino: Slots are always available. The player can open the menu and click join anytime. The gambling experience is between you and the dealer only unlike when you learn how to play craps at the casino.

Step 2: Exchange your money for chips

Land-based casino: Put your money down on the table, and the dealer will take your money and exchange it for chips.

Online casino: Fund should be deposited into the account before commencing the game. Expenditure will be deducted from there everytime the player learns how to play craps casino.

Step 3: Place your bet

Land-based casino: Place your bet if you are the only person at the table. Otherwise, the player will need to wait for his/her turn while the other players roll the dice.

New players are recommended to place pass bets (ideal for learning how to play craps for beginners)

Online casino: The process is nearly similar. However, there is no need to wait for other players to roll their dice. The player can immediately place a bet and roll dice.

Step 4: Place your odds bet

Assumption: The dice roll turned out to be a 6 (or 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 a.k.a point numbers). When the dice shows point numbers, the player will need to roll the dice again.

The shooter needs to roll another 6 again. If the shooter rolls a 7 before the point, their round is over, and the next shooter takes their place.

Odds bet can only be placed after a point is thrown. This is important to remember when you learn how to play craps table.

Land-based casino: The player will place bets on the specific number on the roll out. Essentially, the player will guess what the number could be, and place bets on it.

The goal is to roll the point before a 7. If that happens, pass line bets are paid 1:1. If a 7 is rolled first, all pass line bets lose.

Online casino: Similar to land-based casino.

Step 5: Finale

Several outcomes can determine whether the player receives a payout.

  • If the dice shows a 7, lose all bets.
  • If the dice shows 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, or 10, nothing happens.
  • If the dice shows a 6 (point number in Step 4), you win all your bets.

If you win, you will collect winnings for pass bet (Step 3) and odds bet (Step 4). You are free to leave and end the game.

The Basic Rules When Playing Craps

  1. Betting centered on the pass line.
  2. Bets are started by placing bets on the pass line. Due to the large layout of the table, the dealer may assist to move your bets to a more suitable position.
  3. The pass sequence starts with a come out roll and this is followed by the shooter rolling the dice.
  4. If the shooter rolls a point number on the comeout, he keeps rolling until either he rolls the same number again to win an even-money payout, or rolls a 7 to lose.

The layout of the table is rather straightforward. It is largely identical in land-based and online casinos. All sections on the table are clearly indicated. Therefore, the player should place chips on the section where he or she wants to bet.

When it comes to play craps online, the betting process is far more simplified. This is because the player can interact with any section on table layout with a click of the mouse. Therefore, all betting processes are self-reliant and more organized. This is because each game only consists of one player and one dealer.

At a physical casino, the players will notice several staff managing the big and intimidating craps table. While everyone is attempting to perfect their skills in how to play casino craps, the staff comprises of:

  • Stickman: Responsible for proposition bets and callout of results.
  • Standing dealers: Responsible for bets and handing over chips to the players.
  • Boxman: Responsible for supervising the game and exchange cash for chips.

Unlike other games where the table can be managed by 1 dealer, craps is unique as up to 4 staff can be present. This is to prevent cheating because there are multiple players in action.

Each player can place a bet on every roll, and the player who rolled the dice will be known as the ‘shooter’. It’s not too different from practicing how to play craps at home.

How To Play Multi Bet Rolls

i. Pass line and come bets

House edge: 1.41%

Most common bets in craps. After all bets are placed, the dice roll have 3 outcomes:

  • 7 or 11 – Automatic win. The next round will be a new game with a new shooter and come out roll.
  • 2, 3, or 12 – Automatic loss. The next round will be a new game with a new shooter and come out roll.
  • 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 – This establishes a point. No one wins or loses their bets. The game then enters the point phase.

ii. Don’t pass line and don’t come bets

House edge: 1.36%

This bets against the shooter. It may lead to 4 outcomes:

  • 2 or 3 – Automatic win
  • 7 or 11 – Automatic loss
  • 12 – This is a push. You get your bet back.
  • 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 – This establishes the point. No one wins or loses. The game enters point phase.

The come/don’t come bet is a variation of the pass line bet that treats the next roll the same as a comeout bet. The rules are similar to pass/don’t pass line bets

iii. Odds bet

House edge: 0%

Side bets made after a point is thrown. (Explained in Step 4)

iv. Place bets

House edge 1.52% on 6 or 8; 4% on 5 or 9; 6.67% on 4 or 10

  • Place number appears (that matches bet): Automatic win
  • 7: Automatic lose
  • 2, 3, 11, 12: No one wins or loses

v. Buy bets

House edge: 4.76%, or less if commission is only on winners

The rules are similar to place bets except the player pays the house 5% commission. Winning bets will be paid at true odds, and the figures are different according to respective tiers.

  • 4 or 10: 2-1
  • 5 or 9: 3-2
  • 6 or 8: 5-6
